How much does stump grinding cost in Austin?

Do you grind multiple stumps at a discount?

Our Process
Do you call 811 before grinding?
Yes, on every job. Stump grinders cut several inches below the surface, deep enough to hit a shallow gas, water, or sprinkler line if it is not marked first. We handle the locate request so you do not have to.
How deep does stump grinding go?
Most residential stumps are ground 6 to 12 inches below the surrounding soil line, deep enough that you will not hit wood with a mower or shovel, and deep enough to plant grass or mulch over it the same day.
How long does stump grinding take?
Small stumps under 12 inches typically take 15 to 20 minutes. Large stumps over 24 inches can take 60 to 90 minutes or more. Multiple stumps on one property are usually faster per-stump than separate visits.
What happens to the wood chips after grinding?
You can keep them for mulch around garden beds at no extra cost, or we can haul them off for a small add-on fee. Most Austin homeowners keep at least some for their own landscaping. The pile left behind is usually about the same volume as the stump and root flare we removed.
Stump Regrowth & Aftercare
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
No. Grinding removes the trunk and the main root flare below grade, cutting off the tree's ability to feed itself through that stump. Most Central Texas species will not come back. A few, like hackberry and occasionally Chinese tallow, can send up small root suckers from the surrounding root system for a season or two, which are easy to manage with mowing.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
You can, but we usually recommend planting a few feet away from the old stump location rather than directly on top of it. The old root system takes years to fully break down underground, and decaying wood can pull nitrogen from the soil right where a young tree needs it most.
Grinding vs. Full Removal
What is the difference between stump grinding and full stump removal?
Stump grinding shreds the stump and upper root flare below grade using a grinding wheel, leaving wood chips behind while deeper roots decay naturally underground. Full removal digs out the entire root ball with an excavator, which disturbs more of the yard and costs more, and is really only necessary if you are building directly over that spot.

Can you grind stumps in tight backyards with narrow gates?

Can you grind a stump close to a fence, wall, or gas line?
Yes, with care. We call 811 before every job to mark gas, water, and sprinkler lines, and we size the grinder to the access so we can work close to a fence or wall without damaging it. For stumps directly against a foundation or wall, we may grind at a slight angle or leave a small amount of root mass in place to avoid disturbing the structure.
Are you insured?
Yes, fully insured on every job, residential or commercial. Certificates of insurance are available on request for HOAs and property managers.

Why is Austin soil harder on stump grinding?
Central Texas caliche and limestone-based soil is denser and harder on grinder teeth than sandy or loamy soil found elsewhere, which is part of why we quote based on the actual stump and site rather than a flat rate.
What species take longest to grind?
Live oak, cedar elm, and pecan are dense hardwoods that take longer to grind through. Hackberry and Ashe juniper tend to grind faster, though hackberry is more prone to root suckers afterward.
